In recent years the industry of food and all those concerned with human health are paying attention to soybeans – protein which is derived from soy plant. It represents a nutritional product rich in omega-3 fatty acids, B-vitamins, zinc, iron, polyunsaturated fat, fiber, antioxidants and phytochemicals. The most popular within the vegetarian community, soy protein, is a substitute for the animal protein – as one cup contains 23 grams of protein.

 

 

So it can be found in some of the world’s most popular foods, including tofu, edamame, tempeh and soy milk. Soy contains isoflavones, which in the body is altered and converted into phytoestrogens. Phytoestrogens are very similar to the estrogen hormone. Women often use soybeans as a substitute for hormone therapy which aims to relieve symptoms associated with menopause. Also, it is considered that soy helps to prevent and control of heart disease and cancer.

 

However, the effects of soy are controversial. Human cells, including cancer cells have a protein receptors that are directed towards molecules to which they bind. Because human estrogens and phytoestrogens which are obtained from the soy, are so similar, the human cells can not make a difference.

 

 

There are theories and beliefs that phytoestrogens obtained from the soy can cause the growth of breast cancer because it is similar to human estrogen. On the other hand, some believe that in fact it can prevent breast cancer, because it takes the place of the human estrogen receptor within the protein.

 

In order to use all the possible benefits from soy, the only way to do it is to use, in small quantities, only fermented soy products. Soy protein is a good alternative to animal protein and dairy products – which are rich in saturated fat.

 

Tips for consuming soy:

 

Avoid processed soy products such as soy ice cream, canned tuna in soybean oil, soy chips, soy milk, soy burgers with, baby nutrition soy nuts and certain types of tofu, because they might be  harmful.

 

Do not consume more than one serving of soy per day (30 mg).
