How to prevent osteoporosis

As we get older, the bone density decreases due to the gradual loss of minerals from the skeleton. The loss of the bone mass – a condition called osteoporosis – causes weakness and bone fragility. It is a condition more common in older women, due to the hormonal changes after the menopause, but it affects the men too.

A large number of women who are past menopause suffer from this disease, although it can affect younger women. In average, each year, around 200,000 fractures happen because of this disorder. Especially of the spine, hips and wrists. By the age of 80, every second woman, at least once breaks a bone due to osteoporosis.

Osteoporosis often has no symptoms until there is fracture after a fall. Signs of the disease are dangling teeth, loss of height and kyphosis (excessive curvature of the upper part of the spine). Measurement of the bone’s density can detect the seriousness of osteoporosis.

How Does Osteoporosis Develop

Bone density increases in childhood and adolescence. We constantly produce new bone cells, and the old ones are decomposing. The bones are usually densest and most resistant in 20 year old people.

Osteoporosis – which means “porous bones” – occurs when the tissues of the bone breaks down faster than the creation of a new one. When a woman approaches to menopause, the bone deteriorates more than it is being renewed, and the bones become less dense.

Osteoporosis may be caused due to the natural decline in estrogen levels, which helps the body to absorb calcium. After menopause, the loss of estrogen is a major risk factor. The risk of osteoporosis in men increases as they get older.

The amount of available calcium is also very important in determining the quick bone construction and absorption. If your diet does not have enough calcium, and the amount of calcium in your body is not enough for the needs of the vital parts of the body, cells that are called osteoclasts (bone cells destroyers) release the calcium from the bones. So the bones become more porous and frangible.

Natural remedy for osteoporosis is apple cider vinegar. It is believed that it increases the acidity in the stomach and helps the body to absorb calcium.  Put one teaspoon of apple cider vinegar in a glass of hot water and drink it before every meal.
